STILL ON THE USE OF COW DUNG AND ALL SORTS OF THINGS ON INFANT’S NAVEL
A baby was brought to the hospital on the account of
neonatal tetanus. It was noticed that this baby got infected by the method of
the navel care used by the mother. The mother mixes lizard sheet and cow dung
with other things and said she had used this method on her two older children
so she doubts if her mixture caused the child’s ailment (Hmm nawaoo)
WHAT IS NEONATAL TETANUS
Tetanus is a deadly disease that attacks the nerves and
muscles of the body. It starts off as a skin wound contaminated by bacterium
that is commonly found on the ground. Initially, there is headache and jaw
stiffness that gradually spreads to the neck, making abdominal muscles rigid,
leading to spasm and fever. With more
circulation of the toxin, it negatively affects the nerve activity, leading to
more spasm with excruciating pain and respiratory failure. Without treatment,
tetanus can lead to death.
Neonatal tetanus is a generalized tetanus infection of the
new born. It usually gets transmitted from an unvaccinated mother during
pregnancy. It also enters the new born body through infection of unhealed
umbilical stump (navel). It is one of the leading causes of new born deaths in
developing world.
SYMPTOMS
·
Rigidity of muscle
·
Grimace of face and restlessness
·
Poor feeding/ suckling ability
RISK FACTORS
·
Unvaccinated pregnant mother
·
Unhygienic condition during birth
·
Use of traditional methods for umbilical cord
management (cow dung, rat sheet, ash, sand etc.)
Another one is the use of tooth paste
A mother delivered at a hospital, the following morning after
her delivery, the nurse on duty bathed her baby and was cleaning, immediately
the woman brought out tooth paste and was giving the nurse. The nurse got
confused as to why she was giving her tooth paste. She directed the woman to
the bathroom where she can brush her teeth thinking that was why the woman was
giving her the tooth paste. On the contrary, the woman was giving her the tooth
paste for her to apply it to the babies umbilical cord (just imagine)
FROM THE GOOD NURSES TABLE
·
Please mothers; like I said earlier, nothing
should be used to clean your child’s navel, apart from spirit and cotton wool.
·
The navel should be cleaned with spirit and
cotton wool 4 to 6 times or more a day please.
- Please, dear parents, stop the application of these substances and mixtures to your baby’s navel, they do not work or prevent anything, rather they cause problems to them. (photo credit :www.google.com)
