UNDER RATING THE WONDERS OF FOLIC ACID (A WOMAN GAVE BIRTH TO A BABY WITH BIRTH DEFECT)
With recent development and exposure in Nigeria, there are
certain behaviors or acts that are supposed to have been extinguished by us,
even when unconsciously displayed by someone, people, neighbors even children can
easily correct and put that person back to tract. But believe me, those things,
behavior and acts some of us think it’s no longer possible to exist still do to
its maximum.
Can you believe that in this time and era, some people do
not take their antenatal routine drugs not even once throughout their period of
pregnancy?
A woman was brought in to the hospital as she was in labor;
this is someone that had attended antenatal classes though not regular about 3
to 4 times throughout her gestation. Gave birth to a baby that would have been
sweet to look at, but instead, the baby was full of abnormalities. The most
glaring of the defects was the neural tube defect the baby had (spina
bifida). The neural tube is the
structure that eventually develops into the baby’s brain and spinal cord. It starts
to form in early pregnancy and closes about 4 weeks after conception. In spina
bifida, part of the neural tube doesn’t develop or close properly leading to
defects in the spinal cord and bones of the spine. It is not known exactly what
causes spina bifida, but a lack of FOLIC ACID before and in the early stages of
pregnancy is a significant risk factor. (www.nhs.uk)
This woman was asked if she had been attending antenatal
classes and if she had religiously taken her routine drugs? And she said she
had attended the classes about 3 or 4 times but had not been taking the drugs
because she could not tolerate the smell of the drugs. But she complained to
her aunt who advised her not to bother taking the drugs as long as she eats
well. You can imagine people that play the role of doctors even without going
to school.
FROM THE GOOD NURSE TABLE
·
It is quite embarrassing to tell somebody that a
pregnant woman says that she cannot take her routine drugs. Because it will be
assumed that she did not know why she should take those drugs. And the most embarrassing
is the people at home who play the role of doctors without even having senior
school certificate who will tell you what is and is not obtainable in medicine.
·
Folic acid and other routine drugs are very
important during pregnancy because it helps prevent some major birth defects,
and proper development of the fetus.
·
Our mothers, when you have any complaint during
pregnancy, it is proper to come to the hospital for proper clarification. If not
for anything, for the successful birth of a healthy baby.( photo credit: www.google.com)
