DO YOU KNOW THAT THERE IS TROUBLE FOR THOSE CONSUMING ALCOHOL DURING PREGNANCY
Alcohol consumption during pregnancy is one of the most
dangerous things to do during pregnancy because, while pregnant, no amount of
alcohol is considered safe to drink, and there is no safe time or trimester to
drink alcohol (world health organization). This is because, throughout the pregnancy
period, the different systems that make up the body are progressively developing,
and any disruption during the development of any of the systems can cause a
defect in the child when given birth to.

A woman was brought to the hospital during labour, looking
very unkempt and was smelling of alcohol. She was asked why she took alcohol
before coming, and she said her husband told her to drink enough alcohol any
time she is in labour that it will help ease her pain and she won’t feel labour
pain and it has been helpful to her, and that she had did same to all her children. This woman has about 3 children. She also
said that each time she becomes pregnant, that she always have craving for
alcohol and she consumes as much as she can.
On delivery, she delivered a baby looking abnormal, with
small head size and eyes, the weight of the baby was about 1.9 to 2 kg. To cry
was even so difficult for the baby as it made one sound in the name of cry. Then
there was an opening at the upper lip of the mouth which extends towards the
nose (cleft lip and palate) it was just a pity. The baby was immediately transferred
to special care babies unit for management.
All these features seen in the baby are signs of the effect
of consuming alcohol during pregnancy. These signs are not the end of the
effect of alcohol consumption in pregnancy, it still has some effects the child
will display when grown.
