BAD SIDES OF SELF MEDICATION: A WOMAN GAVE BIRTH TO A BABY WITH CLEFT LIP AND PALATE AND OTHER ABNOMALITIES

It has been said over and over again about the trouble self medication can cause. But to some people, it's just like ringing bell for brake time and after the brake people go back to it. But we will keep health educating, counselling and reaching out to our brethren in order to save lives.
Pregnancy period is not like ordinary period in a woman's life, when you can do anything you feel like doing or take any drug you feel like taking. It is a period where your care to your self needs an upgrade. It is a period that any drug taken must be a drug prescribed by your doctor who must have been aware of your pregnancy.  Because during pregnancy, there are formation of organs and systems that form the human being you are carrying and any disruption of any of the processes of formation can lead to deformity. And some drugs can be toxic to the fetus when being formed leading to birth defect.
A woman brought in her new born to the hospital with so many abnormalities,  the most glaring of them all was the cleft lip and palate. She was asked if she attended antenatal while pregnant, she said no that she did not have money to register for antenatal, but from time to time she takes mixture of antibiotics and also complement it with herbs (argbo). And that she gave birth at home and after she saw what the child looks like, she decided to bring her to the hospital.
This is what self medication can do. Now that it has happened, money to come to the hospital appears and now she will spend more than she bargained because that baby needs surgery as well.

So many women that have gone through pregnancy have lost their chances of being called mothers because of the phrase ‘delivering like women of Hebrew’.   This ‘delivering like women of Hebrew was coined from the bible “ye shall give birth like the women of Hebrew” mean while it did not specify what kind of delivery women of Hebrew went through, whether it was caesarean section (through operation) or vaginal delivery.   Believe me, that these two processes are both considered acceptable and normal ways of giving birth to children in human beings, but some of our women here, consider vaginal delivery as the only normal way a woman should be put to birth and they also believe that it was the only way the Hebrew women gave birth.
