THE WAY SOME TRADITIONAL BIRTH ATTENDANTS HANDLE LABOUR AND DELIVERY CASES IS QUITE ALARMING

The hallmark of every acclaimed medical personnel is "referral" of cases beyond his or her capacity. To some people, referral is not in their dictionary, they prefer to handle the case till the end, in order to take the glory. But the truth is that glory comes to you when you reduce complication, damages and save life by referring to hospital cases that are beyond you.

A woman in labour was brought into the hospital with her private part in shambles due to different types of tear (episiotomy) given to her by her traditional attendant, said to have labored for two days. At first, she was asked to put an empty coke bottle in her mouth and was asked to blow it hard while jumping up and down, that it would help the labour to progress fast. As if that was not enough, she was asked to lie down for vaginal examination, and was told that she had made a little progress and for that reason, they would help her progress more by one person climbing on her belly to push down the baby, while the other person puts hand in her vagina to pull the baby out and therefore gave her three different tears. Still the baby was not forth coming, as the woman was at the verge of dying, was when she was referred to the hospital and before she could get to the hospital, the baby was no longer alive.

· My fellow health practitioners including traditionally acclaimed health personnel, trying to do it all alone especially the cases beyond you is the worse practice ever. That is the reason we have higher hospitals with higher facilities endowed with specialists in most cases to take care of this cases beyond us in order to save lives.

· Remember that referral is another method of life saving skills, please do not forget that especially when faced with complicated medical case.
